Meditation and study Foundation Programme
with Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Sangye

Monday evenings 7pm to 9pm
Try two Introductory sessions before enrolling
Do you want to take your Dharma studies to new depths? The Foundation Programme is the ideal step after attending the drop-in classes. Students undertake a more systematic and thorough study of the subjects covered in Geshe-la’s books. Here is a wonderful opportunity to study the Great Scope section of Joyful Path of Good Fortune by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, his principal text on Lamrim , the Stages of the Path.
The Foundation Programme is open to anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding, meditation and practice of Buddhism by studying in a systematic way.
Please contact epc@samudracentre.org if you have some interest in joining the programme.
"The practice of Lamrim is very important because everyone needs to cultivate peaceful states of mind. By listening to or reading these teachings we can learn how to control our mind and always keep a good motivation in our heart. This will make all our daily actions pure and meaningful. By controlling our mind we can solve all our daily problems, and by gradually improving our daily practice of Lamrim can advance from our present stage to the stage of a Bodhisattva. By progressing further we can become a fully enlightened being. This is the essential meaning of our human life ." Ven Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
"For me the Foundation Programme has been something that I have been looking for, for a long, long time. It has been the path of search for peace, and now I have found the path, my life has been transformed. "Present student
How to participate
You can participate in one of three ways: in-person, live streamed, or by correspondence:
In-person – students attend each scheduled class at Samudra Buddhist Centre
Live streamed – if in-person attendance is not possible due to certain conditions eg disability, students can sign up for this option – to attend the classes ‘live online’
Correspondence – if students wish to study on FP but cannot make the Monday evening class time, they can sign up for this option – to receive an audio recording of each class to listen to at a time convenient for them.
Classes run approximately 36 times a year (roughly following school term dates). Students commit to attend every class (unless for unavoidable reasons).
Why study on the Foundation Programme
The study format has been designed by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso to quickly deepen our understanding and experience of the teachings and meditations. In this way the programme functions to fulfil both our own and others wishes by increasing our wisdom and compassion. With wisdom and compassion we can solve all the problems we encounter in daily life.
All the teachings are given by our Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Sangye, who is a close disciple of Ven. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. He has over 25 years’ teaching experience including the USA, UK and Europe. Originally coming to Tara Centre, Buxton in 1991, he ordained as a Buddhist monk the following year. He is known for his insightful and precise teachings that arise from a wealth of experience. Gen Sangye's warmth, kindness and humility is an inspiration to all the students and visitors to Samudra Centre.
What is involved
Classes include prayers, guided meditations, teachings and discussion. Every fourth class is a whole class discussion to further deepen our understanding.
Participants enrol for the study of each book (or section of the book), and undertake to take an exam at the end of the section.
The fee for attending foundation programme is £35 per month, and this also gives access to all evening classes, day courses and retreats. Please email epc@samudracentre.org
