Our History & Heritage
From Tara to Samudra (1982 – Present)
Kadampa Buddhism in the High Peak began in the early 1980s when Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche established the original Tara Centre right here in Buxton. For 14 years, Buxton served as the primary regional hub for Kadampa meditation.
In 1996, as the community expanded, Tara Centre relocated to Ashe Hall in Etwall (now Tara IKRC). To ensure the High Peak maintained its own dedicated local sanctuary, Samudra Centre was established in Buxton, continuing a 40+ year legacy of sharing peaceful minds in our local town.
The Meaning of Samudra
The word Samudra is the Sanskrit translation of Gyatso, meaning "Ocean." The centre was named in direct honour of our founder, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.
Just as the depths of the ocean remain still and undisturbed beneath surface waves, our centre offers a steady sanctuary where anyone can learn to cultivate deep, unshakeable inner peace in daily life.
